Meet Kate
“Be kind to your friends, and even those who are not your friends.”
My late Dad, for whom the name of my practice is an homage, instilled the value of this sentiment from the time I was a young kid. To this day, I consider kindness an indicator of decency, intellect, morality, and appreciation for others. My family, friends, and clients know that regardless of what’s going on in the room or in the world, they can trust that I will always engage them with compassion, respect, and integrity.
Professionally speaking, I received my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa and my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Oklahoma. Continuing education is a priority so I regularly attend trainings, stay up to date on current trends in psychology, and enjoy sharing interesting or helpful insights I’ve learned with clients in and outside of sessions. I have worked in community mental health agencies and in a small private practice. In January of 2025 I opened my own private practice, Peace On You Counseling. Before counseling, I spent 13 years working in nonprofit fundraising in Tulsa and Chicago, and five years as co-owner of a Tulsa estate sale and residential appraisals company.
You will often hear me urge you to spend time in nature and I practice what I preach. As much as possible, I can be found outside appreciating the views, hiking, visiting state and national parks, literally hugging a tree (try it, it’s scientifically proven to have mental and physical health benefits), gardening, and enjoying daily walks with my husband, daughter, and dog, Charley. The arts have been an important part of my life since I was young, and when I have the opportunity to take in live music, a theatre or dance performance, or visit galleries and museums, I’m eager to do so. Fun fact: I used to sing in a couple of local bands! Mostly, I enjoy being with my friends and family, recharging with a great book, TV series, or word game while my cat Billy Joel lounges in my lap, and playing with our curious, funny, and adorable toddler.
What to expect from our sessions
Therapy is often an enjoyable experience. It’s true! Yes, it’s hard work and there will be days in which you feel exhausted and emotionally drained after a session. However, most often, you will leave feeling hopeful and insightful. My clients and I work conversationally and amiably. Over time, our dialogue will lead you to better understand why and how you think and behave, experience and successfully manage your full range of emotions, improve your outlook and provide greater clarity, and leave you feeling empowered and at peace.
The most important thing I can tell you, and you’ll hear it often, is that you are in control. This is your life, it’s your therapy, and though I will be guiding in some ways, I will not tell what to do. With any issue or conflict, you will be the one coming up with the right solution, and I will support you by offering insights and observations, employing you with the necessary tools, asking the right questions, and, in many cases, providing psychoeducation when appropriate.
My nature and my therapy approach is friendly and optimistic. When clients can’t hold on to hope, I offer to hold it for them until they’re ready. When clients are afraid, I remind them of their capability, worthiness, and innate power. When angry, frustrated, sad, or overwhelmed, I genuinely empathize and validate what they’re feeling. When they’re happy or proud, I celebrate with them! Sometimes, a bit of a firmer hand is needed to nudge someone forward, but I’m never cruel or judgmental.
I will not lie to you. Truth is painful at times, and necessary, but I believe in honesty, not brutal honesty. My hope is that you feel safe and welcome, and that most of the time, you rather enjoy coming to therapy! When appropriate, incorporating levity and humor is a wonderful thing; expect some laughter.
At our first session, we’ll spend a few minutes reviewing policies including confidentiality, cancellations, scheduling, and answering any questions about therapy or my practice. If I have follow-up questions to your intake questionnaire, we’ll go over those, but then the floor is yours and you will decide what you want to address first. Because, as you now know: You are in control.
