Frequently Asked Questions

  • Therapy offers you support, validation, coping skills, and strategies to amend your perspective and negative thoughts or behaviors. It often creates peace of mind and helps you navigate difficult feelings and situations. With therapy, you learn how to regulate your emotional responses, enhance your self awareness, and feel in control of your life. Your counselor creates a safe, non-judgmental space for you to express yourself authentically and may “get” you in a way that no one else has. When you open yourself to what you’re capable of combined with the tools therapy provides, it is extremely powerful and transformative.

Therapy cannot change other people or external circumstances, but it can teach you to respond in healthy and advantageous ways. I provide validation, psychoeducation, feedback, and guidance, but I don’t give advice or answers. If you’re new to therapy, or are exploring unprocessed trauma, therapy may make you feel a bit worse before you feel better. You deserve to feel better.

I can’t tell you how long it will take to notice the benefits of therapy, typically, the more you put into therapy, the more you’ll get out of it.

    I Don’t Believe Therapy Works

It’s quite common to hear people say they don’t think therapy works, that it’s pseudoscience, or that they’re not willing to consider it. This may be based in misperceptions, fear, or a previous bad experience, and that’s understandable. Sometimes though, these people will come to therapy unwillingly, often at the insistence of a family member or friend. The barricade is up before I have even said hello. In a few cases, I’ve been able to break through that wall and witness incredible growth.

If you’ve been directed into counseling by family or friends, or court order, I encourage you to keep an open mind and give it a try. The potential for better relationships, less pain and conflict, greater joy, better sleep, deeper insights, increased patience, and better outcomes in life is what you stand to gain. The most common traits I observe in my clients who are successful in reaching their therapy goals is strength, an open mind, and a willingness to try. Therapy isn’t easy but it is worthwhile.

  • Coming soon

  • No therapist can do it all and mental health is an enormously broad spectrum.

If I am unable to meet your therapy needs, it’s important to me to help lead you in the right direction if I can. When possible, I’ll provide you referrals to therapists I trust and respect. Please also refer to the Resources page for additional help and information.

  • I see clients both in person and online based on their preference.

When possible, in person counseling tends to be a better experience for us both and can foster a stronger therapeutic relationship, lead to more impactful sessions, and allow me to assess for important nonverbal cues not as easily observed online.

I employ Zoom for online sessions. I provide a private and secure link for your sessions.

On occasion, we can do a phone call session though this isn’t ideal on a regular basis.

My office is in midtown Tulsa.

  • If you elect to create a private account in the portal, you have the option to schedule yourself. You’ll see my availability for the week/month and can select a date/time that works for and confirm it immediately.

You contact me to schedule. Please allow for a 24-hour response time, though typically you will hear from me within a few hours.

Some of my clients come weekly, biweekly, or monthly. In those cases, we will set up a consistent meeting date/time.

  • I require a 24-hour cancellation notice so I have the opportunity to contact other clients on my waitlist. I understand life happens and I always strive to be fair and attempt to reschedule.

    1. The first late cancellation (less than 24 hours) will not incur any fees.

    2. The second late cancellation will incur a rate of 25% of the full amount.

    3. The third late cancellation will incur a rate of 50% of the full amount.

    4. After the third late cancellation, you will be charged the full amount thereafter.

  • I work with individual adults and young adults aged 14 and older. For information on my areas of focus and expertise, refer to Services.

I welcome all walks of life. I do not filter clients based on race or ethnicity, religion or spirituality, gender or sexuality, politics, culture, or any other characterizing features. If you want to do the work required in therapy and I have the expertise and availability to work with your therapy needs, then I look forward to getting to know you.

  • Relationships with family, friends, and colleagues can be tumultuous. I work primarily with individuals and regularly delve into relationship issues with clients. I do not specialize in couples’ or family counseling and have referrals for excellent therapists who do.

On an as needed basis, I will work with couples, friends, and family members in joint sessions to manage singular situations or acute problems that can be resolved in 1-3 sessions. I have completed Level 1 training in the Gottman Method of relationship therapy, a highly regarded model, and use a number of other effective methods.

  • If we agree to work together, I will provide you with paperwork you need to complete prior to your intake session. Give yourself adequate time to answer thoughtfully, honestly, and with as much detail as possible. All of this information is yours and remains confidential and secure. I am HIPPA compliant and prioritize your privacy.

The best thing you can do as you approach therapy is to be open. For it to be effective, therapy requires you to be vulnerable which, for most everyone, can feel uncomfortable or even scary. I will do my best to assure you of your safety and privacy. I am a genuinely kind and nonjudgmental person and will provide you with empathy, open mindedness, and acceptance.

  • If you’ve had a bad therapy experience, I’m disappointed you went through that. There are a number of reasons this may have happened. You should always feel safe, welcome, validated, and supported by your counselor. If you don’t, look for someone new.

Often the issue is the lack of a strong and trusting connection with the therapist. If you can’t trust your therapist enough to be vulnerable with them, therapy isn’t going to work for you and your therapist will be at a loss to help you as well. I tell every client that if they don’t feel they can open up to me, aren’t vibing, or don’t work well with my approach, it will not hurt my feelings. Truly, I want you to trust and have a good rapport with your therapist and if it isn’t me, that’s okay. Keep searching until you find the right fit (see my FAQ about the therapeutic relationship).

A willingness to be vulnerable and to face the painful pieces and things you don’t like so much about yourself is critical to your counseling success. If you haven’t been able or willing to do that previously, assess why that is and if now feel ready. If not, your counselor will not be able to help you no matter what they try. Therapists aren’t mind-readers, but we do want to help if you’re willing.

You’re here reading this for a reason. If you’d like to give counseling another shot and want to do a brief consult with me to see if you’re comfortable, I warmly welcome you.
